I've never really eaten soba before.  Yeah I've had some from  a friend's plate while they were off to the bathroom but I've never actually ordered it.  I guess part of the reason is that I don't really know how to eat it .  Not that it's that difficult but you know, Japanese food can be intimidating at times if you don't know what you're doing.  And now for the question.....

Can anyone recommend a good place to get a quality bowl (or is it a plate) of soba?  With summer coming up I think it's prime time to take the plunge.  Something in the SF Bay Area (preferably in the S. Bay) would be appreciated.

Chris, I'm no soba expert, but I've had it a few times.  It's usually served cold with some kind of slightly sweet sauce, similar to tempura dipping sauce (I think it's called mirin).  You basically pour the sauce over the soba to suit your taste.  Although it's a light dish, it can be filling!

On one occasion, I underestimated the quantity of soba and ordered it with a sashimi entree.  I was only able to take a few bites of it.

I've tried making it at home, and it's as easy as making pasta (just boil it until it's al dente), but it's the sauce I had problems faking... er, making.

Hi, Chris.  My absolute favorite place for soba is Mifune in Japantown, up in SF (Sorry, haven't found a good place down in the South Bay yet).  You can get the San Shoku Soba there, which gives you a sampler of three dipping sauces and is light, yet satisfying (leaving you room for dessert!).  If you want to just grab some soba to go though, I recommend the Nijiya Supermarket in Mountain View (corner Grant and El Camino Real, very near the 85).  You can get their Zaru Soba from the bento section and it is simply delicious, a great lunch on the go for under $5.00.  Have fun!

I second Mifune.  I've also discovered that several Japanese restaurants also serve zaru soba.  Chances are the one nearest you has 'em.

How I eat soba:  I first mix in the green onions and those minced horseradish in the sauce, then I grab some soba and dunk it in the sauce and in my mouth! :)

Jeannette, have you tried those bottled Shirakiku soba sauce?

E.T., my brother mentioned that there is bottled soba sauce.  Thanks for the name.  I haven't really looked for it, but now I know what to look for.

Su, I think I had that noodle dish but never knew what it was called.  This version had sashimi and tofu and greens, so it was like a salad.  Or are you talking about just plain noodles?  I had it at a restaurant on El Camino called Melody Sushi.  The owners are a Korean couple I think, and the woman mentioned it was a Korean dish but we couldn't understand what she called it.  Anyway, it was so good that I sometimes crave it!
