09/07/2008Restaurant Jeanne d'Arc is a treasure and worth it. The food, atmosphere and most of all hospitality, is delightful. It is a bargain for authentic French cuisine. While most of San Francisco is very casual these days, Perhaps it is a good idea to dress up just a little to compliment the owners and staff who work very hard to provide a bit of elegance in the experience.
Not snobbish or stuffy, the ambiance is about dinning in a cozy and welcoming environment. Menu changes but price is very reasonable. Jeanne d'Arc from time to time has live entertainment, such as singing with accompaniment set in the background for dinner music. Last year the restaurant hosted a special Christmas Eve dinner/celebration, complete with holiday songs and festive decor. Car parking can be difficult. Powell Street MUNI station is blocks away. And there are two MUNI Bus lines that run along Sutter Street, not far from Bush Street where Jeanne d' Arc has been for many years, perhaps even longer than the "theater" next door. Unlike the neighbors in the "theater" next door who claim they were "famous since the day they opened," Jeanne d' Arc has evolved and matured through the dedication and hard work of its owners to become a world-class restaurant. And, a dinning treasure for San Francisco.

09/07/2008In a failed attempt to find a different Vietnamese restaurant in the same neighborhood, we found ourselves defaulting to this highly visible and popular neighborhood business.
I've been there several times before and it's great. We discovered a new food (a recommendation from another restaurant owner): a spicy sliced beef salad that you'll find in the appetizer section of the menu. It was so good.
The staff was so darn friendly. We felt very welcome the entire meal through.

09/07/2008Parma - It Really Could Have Been Parma!
Sometimes magic happens when a diner steps foot into an ethnic restaurant. The restaurant is so authentic in atmosphere, from music to aroma of the food, to make the diner believe that they have been magically transported to the country of inspiration, like a Harry Potter character by Apparition. Parma, a little Italian restaurant. has such magic. From its petite-ness to the Italian banter of the service, I felt like the experience would allow me to claim I'd been to Italy, or at least eaten at one of its little bistros. My brother, his friends, and I began with two fresh and delicious appetizers; tomato and mozzarella and romaine hearts with gorgonzola and pine nuts. Reflective of Parma's entire menu, we could sample or choose from both traditional, tried-and-true dishes and creative new tastes. While we waited for our entrees, background Italian opera and the calm ambience of servers and patrons facilitated great conversation. I enjoyed fettucine with arguably the best marinara sauce I've ever tasted, behind my mother's of course. I love that the dish was originally prepared with angel hair, though I prefer penne, and our waiter customized my dish with a friendly nod. Try doing that at an Applebee's or Chili's! The place felt very special to me because I felt a personal connection that many American restaurants have unfortunately lost touch with, evincing America's general loss of a sense of community in favor of glorification of the individual. We topped off the experience with two unique, yet classic desserts, tarimisu and a lemon tart dubbed "Torta Della Nonna". When the last bites were eaten, I was a little sad, though incredibly full and content, because I didn't want to step out of Italy back unto the noisy, speedy San Francisco street.

09/07/2008Like Christine N., it also took me a nearly a year to finally try this place. I kept hearing so much about it, and everytime I passed by the little shop on College, there'd be a huge line of people, just like the one outside Bi-Rite Creamery in SF.
Is it worth the wait? Yeah...for the interesting/exotic flavors and well-made ice cream and ESPECIALLY for the hand-rolled waffle cone (sealed with chocolate and filled with chocolate down at the tip so your ice cream won't drip out - INGENIOUS!)...even though I don't eat ice cream that often, this is definitely a place worth going to again. The wait's not too bad if you have friends in line with you to chat with and agonize over the the difficult decision of which flavor to choose.
Today I had brown sugar-oatmeal raisin one scoop on a hand-rolled waffle cone (like I said, totally worth the extra 50 cents unless you're on a diet - but then why would you be here anyways?!?! Well, it's ok, you're already there, so go ahead and binge!)...it was pretty good, almost exactly like eating an oatmeal raisin cookie with small bits of crunchy brown sugar giving you bursts of golden sweetness every now and then. And then when you eat the last bit of the waffle cone, the chocolate in the tip is all yummy and soft. Mmmm...=)
Lime sherbet was pretty good but really sour, didn't think I would be able to eat a whole scoop of it. Caramel vanilla was pretty good too but the oatmeal raisin one trumped it as soon as I tried it. I didn't try any other flavors but rose-pistachio looked interesting and the lemon ice cream sounded really good for a hot day.
Accepts Visa & MC, and is a bit on the expensive side (especially for those bombes...ice cream is alright though, I'm kinda used to expensive ice cream and froyo in the Bay Area now). You can decide for yourself whether it's worth the cost and time of waiting in line.

09/07/2008The first Sunday of football and I wasn't really feeling the traditional pizza delivery. Instead, Yelp helped me find this place. The food isn't too expensive and they deliver; meeting all of the criteria for football food.
The order:
12" traditional cheese steak 'whiz with'
2x 8" traditional cheese steaks (one chicken) 'whiz with'
2x chicken wings
an order of cheese fries
The food was here in about an hour - expected as there were probably a crap load of other people ordering at the end of the first half of the 10:00 games.
The chicken wings were just 'ok' - better bleu cheese would have made a big difference.
I am giving up 4 stars because I do enjoy variety in my options for delivery. The food was decent, but the next time I order, I will probably not be getting anything with cheese whiz. Even the name sounds nasty... fortunately, you can also request american or provolone cheese on your cheese steaks.

09/07/2008Okay, just went there with some friends today, and it was fun. Just fun, nothing crazy. It was really crowded, like always, which kinda makes it a little less enjoyable. Tons of little kids are abusing the play guns on Time Crisis (They have TC 2,3,4. Which, by the way, i destroy all those wierd looking baddies), and it smells a little wierd. Yes I know, kinda wierd to critic an arcade on smell... The staff is very pacient and efficient, but the laser tag gets a little messy. In the game there is always those 3 friends, who go around braking all the rules known to laser tag. They ruin the game, which ruins your day, cuz who goes to q-zar and not play laser tag? So, its fun, just some people really ruin it.

09/07/2008Very, very good sushi for foster city - definitely the go-to place for quality, fresh, solid sushi. service, however, is mediocre at best... very slow, spotty, and spacey. i once waited 45 minutes for 2 basic rolls. very sad. they get busy and they can't handle the volume very well. they also consistently forget about you (forget to refill your drink, check on you, etc.) you really have to harass them sometimes to get what you need. but i'll keep getting takeout cuz the sushi is far better than most in foster city!!!

09/07/2008I was never really a fan of breakfast but when my boyfriend suggested Ole's, i was anxious to go try. We went on a Saturday morning and surprisingly, we didn't have to wait long.
I got the waffle combo and a side order of hash browns while my boyfriend ordered a french toast combo. The waffles weren't as good as i expected from reading all the positive reviews. They were just plain waffles. However, the sausage patty that came with my combo, my boyfriends french toast and the hash browns were pretty good. The staff was also really friendly.

09/07/2008For once my lack of direction serves some glad purpose and that is to cause me any amount of hours stumbling through and through this rabbit hole of books and curio-- all covered in a fine patina of dust. The labyrinthine setup will at times lead you to a barrier of unshelved books or an impasse caused by a ladder straddled across an aisle (a no-no zone for the superstitious).
On any hot indian summer day this little grotto will feel more like the center of the sun- which is to say there is no air conditioning unless you count the single mini desk fan oscillating in the center of the store, oh or the shallow exhale of the just about comatose old men reposing on the antique furniture. This place really would make happy aimless wanderers feel at home, so if you're looking for something specific and expect a direct route to it, walk right out-- or else expect to be utterly flummoxed by the abstruse cataloguing system.

09/07/2008How can you not love a grocery store with a real live butcher inside??? Falletti's meats are the best in town and surprisingly not overpriced like Whole Foods. The butchers are awesome and will happily cut a piece of meat to the size you request. The steaks are always great and there's a few prepped items in the chicken & pork section that are always awesome. I LOVE the stuffed pork chops. The fish can tend to get on the pricey side, however its always pretty fresh.
The wine selection is outstanding. There's something for every budget and most have great descriptions. Generally, there's a good red in the $9-15 range.

09/07/2008The matterhorn is ok. Honestly I wish there was another place to go in the city for fondue since I do love a pot of melted cheese on occasion. The prices are really high for what you get- I could make the same thing at home for half the price. The sides should be more reasonably priced with more variety. I do recommend the mushrooms though, yum.
Service is blah, every time I've tried to go without a reservation the host was very unpleasant so I've learned my lesson. Last time I went the waitress gave us horrible advice to get the meat fondue for 3 and the cheese fondue for 2 even though 2 of us were vegetarians and wouldn't be eating any of the meat. She was quite insistent. The veggies ended up sitting there watching the other 3 eat meat for half the meal since the cheese was gobbled up quickly.
Not sure how I feel about the decor- all the wood is nice and homey but the lighting is too harsh- it would be way more comfortable if they toned it down. The african masks on the walls are just bizzare and it is always too loud.
Go if you've got some money to burn and a hankering for some melty goodness.

09/07/2008YUM! I was craving waffles, but wanted some change; I get into a rut and tend to go to the same places. Based on Jennifer Y.'s review and the pics on Yelp, I was sold - off to Fat Apple's we go.
I ordered the Waffle Special - 1 waffle, 1 egg and 2 strips of bacon (can get sausage or ham as well). The waffle was tasty with the right balance of sweetness, crispness and tenderness; I was extremely satisfied. All this for $7.25.
My man friend picked one of the plates under the breakfast egg special: two eggs (any style), hamburger patty (niman ranch), breakfast pastry, and potatoes with sour cream. His plate was also simply delicious. The hamburger patty sounds like an odd choice, but it's great meat that has that nice flamebroiled flavour. The potatoes as Jennifer Y. described had a nice bite, not overcooked or undercooked with nice accents (green onions, yellow onion, and garlic). Lastly, the apple turnover was phenomenal. The nice surprise is that it comes to your table piping hot. It was nice and buttery, flaky and not too sweet. I would come to Fat Apple's just for this turnover. All this for $9.10
Overall, they serve good food with very reasonable prices. I am a happy camper and I can't wait till my next visit. They are opened till 9pm, so I may be back for dinner. The hamburgers and slaw looked awesome!

09/07/2008Holy crap this place sucks. Maybe it's because the DJ sucked the day I went. I mean I'm a huge fan of trance, but all they had was jungle. We went to the hip hop room and it was BOGUS! I can't even believe they hired that DJ. The place is beautiful but they seriously need better music. And they also need some air conditioners because the hip hop room is WAY too hot.

09/07/2008Recommendation:
Dental Practice of Drs. Shariat and Azad
I came to the dental office of Doctor Shabnam Shariat a year and a half ago in the context of a dental emergency; and they saved me from a very unpleasant situation.
My front lower tooth had cracked unexpectedly. I had gone to see a dentist near my home who charged me an exorbitant amount of money to put on a temporary filling. When I told friends and family members about this charge they recommended that I contact the American Dental Association, which I did. In reviewing the situation with the professional association, I found that the dentist had indeed charged an unusually high amount. Upon learning this information, I made a decision to seek out a more ethical practitioner. On the positive recommendation of my housemate, I contacted the office of Drs. Shariat and Azad, and they fit me in to the schedule for the very next day.
When I arrived with my temporarily filled tooth, I told them about the costs I had endured and they expressed surprise and sympathy right away. When I told them that I was between jobs and uninsured, they assured me that I would be apprised of all of my options and that we would be able to find a financially workable solution. Both Dr. Shariat and Dr. Azad discussed with me the relative advantages of bonding and crowns, and then, separately, so as not to put me under pressure, the financial manager, Mireya Medina went over the costs and payment options with me. I felt so secure in this highly professional setting - where full disclosure was the norm and the patient was given the mental and physical space to come to a determination about how to proceed with treatment. After considering the options, I decided to go with the bonding.
Dr. Leila Azad and her very friendly assistant, Doris, created the bonding and went through pains to make sure that it was absolutely smooth to the touch.
The bonding has held up beautifully, and I have returned several times since then. A couple of months after my visit I got a job with excellent dental coverage, which enabled me to get a deep cleaning, a badly needed filling, and even do some preventative work, in which very deep grooves were filled. On each and every visit, I have had an excellent time. I feel I am in good hands with these dental professionals.
Currently, in addition to her practice with Dr. Shariat, Dr. Azad volunteers her services at Pacific Dental School, and in that way helps to make good dental care available to those with no insurance and limited financial means.
Drs. Shariat and Azad are beautiful human beings - and by this I don't just mean their good looks - they are compassionate, intelligent, discerning, and ethical practitioners. I recommend them completely and without reservation!

09/07/2008Very, very inconsistent service every time we go (we go because Chloe's, which is far better, is always too crowded.) The owner disagrees with customers, does not seem to treat his employees well and has not developed a system for his servers that works. This morning our two plates of scrambled eggs arrived cold - our server gladly took them back to the kitchen. When she returned them to us, one was undercooked and runny with the feta cheese on the side rather than cooked inside with the rest of the vegetables. The cheese in the second egg dish wasn't completely melted. The toast was cold since we had to wait for the egg dishes. Never again - next time we'll just wait in line at Chloe's.

Updated - 09/07/2008Wanted to provide an update on the recent care I was provided at Glen Park Dental:
Dr. Ramirez and I decided to move ahead with Invisalign treatment. And it's going well. My teeth are quickly moving into perfect alignment which is not just cosmetic, but helpful in preventing any more of my teeth from developing hairline fractures (had an episode a few months ago of extreme pain as a result). It wasn't inexpensive, but it was the right thing to do. I realized early on that sometimes in life I'll need to make make financial sacrifices in order to keep up good health. I've shelled out money before to take care of my back, physical therapy, and for my eyesight. This isn't any different.
Also, Dr. Tom provided one of his stellar jobs at teeth-cleaning. And I had a quick whitening treatment that has left me very happy with my progress and current health.
Thanks Glen Park Dental! As always, you're doing an awesome job.
P.S. That hairline fracture I mentioned earlier could have led to a very painful root-canal procedure, but Dr. Ramirez worked skillfully to provide an onlay that allowed me to walk out of their office without losing my tooth and saving me a fortune in endodontist costs. I'm so thankful.

09/07/2008i used to work at this bakery back in high school. so lets get some things straight:
1. hatsy and mo are the sweetest and hardest working people i know.
2. EVERYTHING IS DELICIOUS
3. you should try everything. seriously.
every time i get back to the city, the pake, a slice of chiffon, the sprinkle cookies, and of course, THE COFFEE CRUNCH CAKE are a must. goodbye diet, hello Yumtown, USA.
watching mo make all the cakes from scratch and hatsy decorating and hand-piping all the orders gave me a HUGE appreciation for what GREAT cakes taste like. and what i'm willing to pay to get that kind of quality.

09/07/2008I have been searching for a new restaurant after my favorite chinese restaurant Dragon House closed. We decided to try Kirin after reading all the great review at Yelp.
The service was great but the food was a little pricey and was just ok. We will probably give them another try before we write them off.

09/07/2008This is a USEFUL review, My other reviews are pretty unuseful so listen up. The shopping center is full of great shops, easy parking and if you continue onto Sir Francis Drake it will lead you to Larkspur Landing where the Ferry docks.
Major Shops include - Mollie's Stone and Long's Drug. Restaurants, Bakeries, Apparel, Flower shops, Cards, Jewelry, Banks, and Coffee Shop. There is too many to list, here is the link http://www.bonair.com/...
Enough of the usefulness........I use to have my boyfriend pick me up after work and bring me here for Jamba Juice. We would make out like 13 year old teenagers in the parking lot. The Jamba Juice worker who puts away the outdoor chairs would always glare at me with a big grin when I come in.

09/07/2008Wow! Zeke O'Brien has exceeded my expectations of what a dog walker does. My only previous experience with a dog walker was with my niece's dog walker in Long Beach. Cory, the dog walker, was there for Gracie, a wonderful black Lab. My dog Tessa, a mixed Chow and Retriever, is a rescue that appeared in our neighborhood with her mom. Tessa at the age of about 6 weeks and her mom cruised around our 'hood maintaining a safe distance from all human beings. I speculate that this creature that appeared to be a live stuffed animal all cream colored and fluffy had been chased during her first weeks after being weaned. Her mom taught her to avoid animal control well. I have imagined the teachings from her mom telling her "run, puppy, run. You don't want to be put in a cage!"
Because of Tessa's loyalty to me I never thought that I would find a compatible dog walker for her. Tessa is still my loyal puppy, but Zeke has made miraculous inroads during the month that he's been walking her. Tessa seems happier and healthier since she's been making friends with Zeke. The longer outings are great for her but Zeke has modified his schedule to accommodate Tessa's fickle behavior. Imagine wearing a fur coat in 90 degree plus weather! Tessa was more that a bit unwilling to go on 2 1/2 hour walks during our recent heat wave. Zeke arranged evening walks and even took her for multiple walks during the week to meet his time commitment to Tessa and me. I found this to be extraordinary care for Tessa and a commitment from Zeke to be sure that he honored his agreement. Since Zeke can't control the weather or Tessa's fickle side I certainly didn't expect such a high level of service.
I've boarded Tessa and while the care was excellent I never felt that it was really working out. Shortly after engaging OutwardHoundz I had a long weekend trip scheduled. After discussing concerns with Zeke we decided that if Zeke could do additional house checks on Tessa she might be happier. Tessa loved being in her own environment during my trip and I loved the fact that she was at home when I got there!
OutwardHoundz truly provides "more than just a walk in the park". Zeke is a lovely and loving man who I am thrilled is becoming a part of Tessa's life. Zeke gets all the stars for responsibility, enthusiasm, caring and trust.
Tessa and I are two happy campers.

09/07/2008They have wonderful gelato here. There are many kinds to choose from, I usually stick with mint 'n chip which is always a good choice. You order downstairs and can eat either downstairs or up (or just eat it while walking down University). Upstairs they offer a small balcony with tables and chairs, so you can eat while overlooking people walking down the street.

09/07/2008When I was pregnant I would have dreams about the Organic Fried Egg Sandwich.
Instead of DT's, I would have OFEST's.
It is a beautiful creation that consists of a grilled ham and grueyere sandwich with a slather of some magic aioli on top, only to be further perfected by the soft fried egg on top of that. Finish that off with a side of organic greens, and you are talking Sandwichgasm, my friends.
But this is what Chow does. They take the simple comfort foods that we all love, and the do them perfectly with top grade ingredients.
Don't even get me started on the Steak Frittes........

09/07/2008Thank G-d this place took over for Herb's. The food is good, service is good, the decor is nice unlike Herb's. I went here when it was Herb's and then again as Toast. I definitely prefer the new incarnation. The waitress actually checked on me and was friendly. The decor was retro yet not cliched. It is nice to see subpar businesses replaced with good ones.
